Mike Cobb, former mayor and Cubberley champion, dies at 90
Graphic designer had a passion for coaching, enhancing civic life
Mike Cobb, a civic volunteer who served on the Palo Alto City Council for more than a decade and who championed community access to recreational facilities such as Cubberley Community Center and Winter Lodge, died on March 25, according to his family. He was 90.
A graphic designer with a passion for sports and recreation, Cobb served on the council between 1982 and 1993, including stints as mayor in 1986 and 1990. As a council member, Cobb helped negotiate agreements that expanded local residents’ access to Cubberley Community Center, Winter Lodge and the Stanford/Mayfield soccer fields.
Cobb was honored in 2005 with a Tall Tree Award, which recognized his efforts to enhance community spaces. In nominating Cobb for the award, former City Council member Jack Morton lauded Cobb for making time in his life to improve the city.
“No one is more humble about his contributions to the community,” Morton said.
